The area is part of the traditional region of Lower Carniola and is now included in the Southeast Slovenia Statistical Region.〔(Črnomelj municipal site )〕 It is located on a rocky terrace with sinkholes along the road from Črnomelj to the Poljane Valley ((スロベニア語:Poljanska dolina)).〔Savnik, Roman, ed. 1971. Klagenfurt: Leustik.〕 ''Bistrica'' (and its cognates) is a very common Slavic place name; it is a hydronym that was later applied to settlements associated with rivers, creeks, or springs.
